The United States Department of Agriculture, Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA/FAS) in collaboration with partners from USDA/Food System Inspection Service (FSIS), the Department of Health and Human Services, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) improves the awareness of food defense and increases the capacity of international communities to mitigate threats from the intentional contamination of the food system. As part of their International Food Defense Outreach program, FAS provides resources to the National Center for Food Protection and Defense (NCFPD) to host a Collaborative Exchange with selected international professionals each year. Those selected are comprised of professionals from government agencies, academic institutions, and the private sector.
The goal of this effort is to equip the participants with the skills and understanding necessary to facilitate educational programs, vulnerability assessments and food defense planning efforts in their respective countries and regions. Since the attendees have foundational knowledge in food defense, curriculum is programmed accordingly to include intermediate to advanced course content. Additional activities focus on information transfer strategies, curriculum development guidance, and objective setting guidance for participants to use when they return to their country.
