The Food Protection and Defense Institute was awarded a $1 million grant from the Paul G. Allen Ebloa program in October 2015 to apply FPDI-developed technology solutions designed for food system disruption prediction and response to disease outbreak prediction and response. Lincoln Wells, Eva Weingartl and Rahul Anand are the graduate assistants on the Ebola team here at FPDI.

Students from various Centers of Excellence traveled to the Consumer Electronic Show in January to evaluate upcoming technologies as they could be applied to the specific need of the center that they represent.
In April these technologies were presented to the Under Secretary of Science and Technology for DHS as well as the center directors. There were three evaluated technologies that have possible application in the areas on interest for the Food Protection and Defense Institute which were presented by Nicole Lane, a workforce development student.

The Food Protection and Defense Institute has developed a facility-based self-assessment tool addressing key food defense components of the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and proposed and final rules.
Food Safety Magazine announced this week that John Larkin, Ph.D., will receive the magazine's Distinguished Service Award at the 2016 annual meeting of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP), July 31–August 3 in St. Louis, MO. Larkin, currently the research director at the University of Minnesota’s Food Protection and Defense Institute, will be presented with the award during the IAFP awards reception and banquet on Wednesday, August 3.

Cyber security threats present critical risks to all organizations. This talk will characterize and discuss the current cyber threat landscape and then discuss how such threats can impact the manufacturing and food industries in particular. We will discuss different classes of threat actors, including both internal and external threats. We will then discuss best practices and safeguards that audience members should employ both personally and professionally.
