Intentional Contamination of Food Additives and Minor Ingredients

The possibility of intentional contamination of the food supply with a pathogen or toxic substance is a constant threat, one which businesses and governments work diligently to protect against. Because of their wide use in myriad food products, additives and other minor ingredients present a potential target for contamination that could have wide-reaching effects. However, given the small amounts in which such ingredients are typically used, it is unclear how much of a risk this tactic truly poses. This webinar will present work performed by Gryphon Scientific to assess the threat of minor ingredient contamination and identify trends in vulnerability across the food supply.

Cybersecurity and the Food Industry

In March 2016, FPDI hosted a Cybersecurity Summit in Washington D.C. where experts from the food industry, government and academia met to assess the state of cybersecurity in the food industry, the risks and knowledge gaps the industry faces from cyberthreats, and the steps companies can take to protect themselves. This webinar will review findings from this meeting and present updates following the Summit.

Development of a Generic Hazard Analysis for Animal Food

The Food Safety and Modernization Act requires covered animal food production facilities to develop food safety plans that includes an analysis of hazards. This hazard analysis must consider known or reasonably foreseeable hazards. The hazard evaluation must include a number of factors, among those are an assessment of the severity of illness or injury if the hazard were to occur and the probability that the hazard will occur in the absence of preventive controls. This presentation will discuss the development of a generic hazard analysis that includes assessments of hazard severity and probability of occurrence that may be useful to animal food producers as a starting point in development facility specific hazard analyses.

Border-Check: A Transboundary Model for Classical Swine Fever in the United States and Canada 

Transboundary animal diseases are those of significant economic, trade or food security importance that require cooperation between countries to control. Classical Swine Fever is one of the top diseases of concern, alongside foot-and-mouth disease and highly pathogenic avian influenza. FPDI has been developing epidemic simulation models to help address research questions regarding the potential spread and subsequent control of transboundary animal diseases. This presentation will discuss results from an epidemic simulation model of Classical Swine Fever used to examine the impact of US-Canadian border closures on disease spread and trade.

Animal and Agriculture Emergency Response Education and Training Framework (FRAME)

The United States food and agriculture systems are vulnerable. Disease, pests, or poisonous agents that occur naturally, are unintentionally introduced, or are intentionally delivered by an act of terrorism are all possible attacks on the food supply. FPDI has created a comprehensive training framework for animal agriculture emergency responders called FRAME. This webinar will review the goals of this interactive online framework and walk attendees through the system.

Crowd Sourcing Information to Support Public Health Surveillance

Please join us for a one-hour webinar highlighting two innovative projects using crowd sourced information to support public health surveillance. Adam Crawley from the Skoll Global Threats Fund will share Flu Near Year - an online participatory surveillance tool that allows member of the public to complete weekly surveys to report flu symptoms. Raed Mansour from the Chicago Department of Public Health will share Foodborne Chicago - a project that uses technology to mine Twitter for tweets related to food poisoning in Chicago.
