Criticality Spatial Analysis (CRISTAL)

Food supply chains are vulnerable to disruption from both natural disasters and manmade events and such disruptions could lead to significant public health and economic consequences. With support from the Department of Homeland Security, FPDI developed CRISTAL to help private food companies improve their understanding of their supply chain structure and, ultimately, supply chain risks. Companies may use CRISTAL to document supply chains from end-to-end, including supply chain components owned by other entities such as suppliers or distributors. The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) places an increased emphasis on supply chain documentation, product tracing, and event response. By increasing supply chain visibility, CRISTAL is one tool that supports each of these tasks. Furthermore, CRISTAL supports efforts to identify where mitigation resources are most needed during potentially catastrophic supply-chain failures. 

CRISTAL enables privately owned food companies to:

  • Document supply chain components in a user-friendly platform
  • Visualize the geo-spatial structure of a supply chain alongside hazard layers
  • Identify specific points and facilities in food systems that are at risk of failure
  • Review transportation route options and identify transportation-related risks
  • Generate supply chain reports
  • Manage user permissions through role based access

CRISTAL Mobile expands original CRISTAL with mobile technology to document, inventory, and manage supply chains in the field during disaster response.

Building resilience in supply chains improves the delivery of critical resources necessary to support the population following a disaster. Food and other resources are distributed through diverse supply chains that are comprised of multiple, interconnected, and complex systems to move product to disaster sites. With support from the Department of Homeland Security, FPDI developed a technology to support response agencies in the field responsible for supplying, transporting, and serving food during a disaster. Originally developed as a web application for private food companies, the CRISTAL technology has been expanded to include a mobile application. And while currently designed to collect data related to food supply chains, the technology could be used for any supply items needed during a disaster.

CRISTAL Mobile supports the following functions:

  • Creation of a real or simulated event which serves as a virtual location to collect and share information
  • On-the-fly creation of food supply chains while in the field
  • Online / offline capabilities for low connectivity conditions
  • Collection of needs and inventory data from field locations 
  • Logging of incoming and outgoing shipments
  • Reporting of hazard points in the field

CRISTAL Respond

CRISTAL Respond is a geo-spatial web application that facilitates critical information sharing across public and private stakeholders related to supply needs, availability, and movement of goods.

Available supply and timely delivery of humanitarian relief items during a public health emergency is critical to a successful response. These supply chains are comprised of a wide range of actors, including supply manufacturers and distributors, third party logistics providers, UN agencies, NGOs, country governments, and donors. However, these supply chains are weakened by poor end-to-end visibility across stakeholders. Leveraging FPDI technology originally designed for food supply chains, CRISTAL Respond was developed with support from the Paul G. Allen Ebola Program to strengthen humanitarian supply chains. While developed for public health emergencies, CRISTAL Respond could be used to support other types of disasters as well. FPDI has built CRISTAL Respond to collect and share data on estimated supply needs of critical items, humanitarian and commercial stock information (location and quantities), and shipments of critical items into affected areas or staging areas.
